Kelly Boree, Deputy Director, Recreation & Community Services Department, informed the Committee that the Recreation & Community Services Department had received nation-wide recognition and accreditation, ranking 16th in Florida and 99th nationwide, amongst hundreds considered.  The Chair asked Director Boree to get together with Council Research Chief, Jeff Clements, to arrange to have a resolution drafted that commended the Recreation Department’s staff on its noteworthy achievement.

Mr. Allan Wulbern thanked the Committee for its positive action in recommending approval of Ordinance 2011-171 that named McGirts Creek Park in honor of Lew Brantley.  Mr. Wulbern indicated that his family had worked for years to have a park named in honor of his father who had served the City as a State Representative and State Senator.  The park is located in an area that the late Senator Brantley represented during his service in Tallahassee.

Mr. & Mrs. Jerry Carter apprised the Committee on a proposed program to provide music and  reading skills programs for students in the County’s public school system.  They felt that these programs were needed in light of proposed budget cuts that would curtail music offerings and limit library access and hours.  Former teachers, they want to involve area churches and are interested in possible funding.  Council Member Gaffney suggested that Mr. & Mrs. Carter get in touch with the County School Board and get a letter of recommendation that endorsed their proposal.  Council Member Redman suggested that Mr. & Mrs. Carter acquire non-profit status so as to qualify in identifying and seeking funding.  Council Member Jones suggested that the non-profit status would bolster their chances in applying to the Jacksonville Journey or for Community Development Block Grant funds, though they would he in stiff competition with other applicants.  Council Member Yarborough felt that it would be helpful if Mr. & Mrs. Carter touch base with School Board Member Becky Couch who would likely be able to provide some direction.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 4:21 p.m.
