The meeting convened at 4:03 P.M.

 

 

Beth Meyer, Manager of Disabled Services, Office of Military Affairs, Veterans and Disabled Services Department, apprised the Committee on what the U.S. Department of Justice’s Settlement Agreement with the City entailed with regard to ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) issues.

The Mayor signed the Settlement Agreement on April 19, 2013.  Ms. Meyer provided a brief history on how we got to where we are today, recounting the procedures that the City has taken (and continues to take) to redress infractions.  She fielded numerous questions from the Committee on the various projects that the City has undertaken and on budget issues related to funds allotted to meet the City’s obligations.

 

Sharon Hoffmeyer, a member of the Mayor’s Disability Council, commented on the Settlement Agreement and on how the City is addressing disability issues.  Tim Horkin, Office of General Counsel, fielded questions, as well.

At the close of the agenda items, Council Member Brown returned to the Disabilities Settlement Agreement and raised issues and concerns that he felt merited further discussion.  The Chair concurred and announced that these were areas and issues that the Committee should be proactive.  She requested that Ms. Meyer provide the Committee members with additional information on the Settlement and how the City addresses the issues so as to allow the Committee to address those issues and concerns at its next meeting.
