The Committee shall consider matters relating to the Department of Health; public health, international travel, wellness; mental health; addiction; human services; homelessness; public assistance; Public Service Grants, public safety; safety hazards and dangerous infrastructure; motor vehicle inspections; collections; crime  and crime prevention; victim services;  Jacksonville Journey; Sheriff's Office; police-community relations; Fire and Rescue Department; emergency preparedness and civil defenses; military bases; personnel and affairs; base realignment and closure (BRAC) issues; and all related subjects.

 

If a person decides to appeal any decision made by the Council with respect to any matter considered at such meeting, such person will need a record of the proceedings, and for such purpose, such person may need to ensure that a verbatim record of the proceedings is made, which record includes the testimony and evidence upon which the appeal is to be based.

Council Member Bill Gulliford, sponsor of the measure, explained that he was still conferring with skateboarding groups.

 

Assistant General Counsel Paige Johnston explained that this particular item did not concern the Uber legislation that Mr. Hazouri had mistakenly assumed.

Council Member Aaron Bowman asked about the status of the Sheriff’s initiative to reduce violence crime a year after the initiative was launched.  JSO Assistant Chief T. K. Waters explained that the initiative had been going well, that JSO was seeing positive results.  700 gang members had been identified and that JSO had met with these individuals, most of whom are on probation, to impress upon these gang members that there were alternatives to gang life, that there were paths for them to live different lives.  JSO is partnering with Project New Hope, the Clara White Mission, Garlan Scott  and others on the initiative for job training and other programs for gang members who sought an alternative life-style.

Council Member Anna Lopez Brosche asked Mr. Cook what the Journey has been doing.  Mr. Cook described the Journey’s programming that worked with data analysis for community outreach, in the creation of a steering committee and contracting services.
