Prior to the vote to defer the item, a lengthy discussion ensued on a number of concerns raised.

 

Council Member Greg Anderson was concerned appropriated funds could be allocated for food and beverages.  Assistant General Counsel Lawsikia Hodges explained that the Ordinance Code prohibits spending City funds for food and beverages.  She further explained that the funds in this particular ordinance is to be allocated for police, JFRD, bleachers, stages and park maintenance.

 

Council Member John Crescimbeni was concerned that in the ordinance’s language district Council Members was underlined.

 

Brent Fine, Special Events Manager, explained what the proposed legislation entailed and fielded numerous questions.

 

Kirby Oberdorfer, City Ethics Office, fielded questions on the solicitation of private organizations  by Council Members for sponsoring events; she indicated that the law would bar such solicitation if the event personally benefitted the Council Member or the Council Member’s family.

 

Council Member Anderson recommended that the item be deferred.  Council Member Danny Becton indicated that whether the item was deferred or not, when the measure is ready for a vote, he would be pushing the red button.  By vote of the Committee, the item was deferred.
