The meeting was called to order at 3:30 p.m.

The Committee Chair reviewed the marked agenda provided by the Council Auditor’s Office, which includes two items recommended for second reading and re-referral.  At the conclusion of that brief agenda there will be two presentations – one by Dr. Robert Harmon, Director of the Duval County Health Department, and the other by Mr. Frank Brendan, a citizen advocate for increased street lighting in the city.

The Chair opened the floor for discussion of his proposal at the last PHS meeting that the committee members suggest topics for study by the committee during the upcoming committee year.  The following possible study topics were suggested:

  • Public safety budgets – Mr. Hyde has invited Sheriff John Rutherford and Director of Fire and Rescue Dan Kleman to attend the August 20 meeting to discuss their operations and budgetary needs;
  • Infant mortality (Hyde and M. Jones);
  • Failing infrastructure and its impact on public health and safety (Hyde)
  • Budget reductions and their effect on public health and safety (M. Jones)
  • Safer Jacksonville Committee – how to implement its work and recommendations (M. Jones)
  • Ex-offender re-entry into society (M. Jones)
  • Juvenile Assessment Center  (M. Jones)
  • Truancy and out-of-school suspensions (Redman)
