At the conclusion of the agenda, Dana Fields-Johnson of the Duval County Health Department gave a presentation on the department’s new informational campaign “Unnatural Causes – is inequality making us sick?”  The campaign is a joint project of the Health Department and WJCT television to localize a larger national campaign to study the root causes of health car problems in the United States.  Despite the fact that the U.S. spends more than any other country on health care, we rank 30th in health outcomes.  The Health Department last week issued a report called Place Matters, a report on health equity in Jacksonville.  The report documents how risk factors and health outcomes vary widely by location within Jacksonville.  Many neighborhoods have poor community assets (employment base, housing stock, transportation resources, recreational amenities, grocery and drug stores, etc.) and their health outcomes show the effects of these disparities.  The Health Department is holding a series of town meetings throughout the city to publicize the Place Matters findings, and is working with WJCT to hold a televised town hall meeting on June 19th to talk about the problems in Jacksonville and about best practices in other cities.  A community action plan is needed that will address equity across neighborhoods around the city.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 4:27 p.m.
