Bill Summary Fact Sheet DEFER Council
Member Jones explained that he had a meeting on September 9, 2010 with
residents in the neighborhood to discuss and explain the legislation. He had personally canvassed the
neighborhood, going door to door to post notices on either doors or fences
noticing the meeting. In the interest
of saving money, he did not do a mailing.
Only a handful of people showed up at the meeting, none of whom had
any objections to the street closure.
He explained that the college asked him to sponsor legislation closing
the street for security purposes, that female students walked to and from
their dormitory and the student union and gymnasium facilities by way of the
street. Council Member Johnson
repeated her assertion, voiced earlier at the agenda meeting, that many in
the community had not received any notice of the meeting. She requested that the measure be deferred
until she had had an opportunity to determine who actually attended the
meeting. Council Member Jones
indicated that he was willing to defer the matter, notice another meeting (by
mail). Both Council Members assured
the Committee that the matter could be resolved by the next Committee cycle. |
