Council Member Schellenberg asked for an explanation of the bill.  Director Martin Senterfitt, Fire & Rescue, Emergency Preparedness, explained what the legislation entailed; there was zero cost for the City; a FEMA grant provided most of the grant, with the homeowner responsible for a portion of the cost.

 

Council Member Boyer requested a list of the properties (after being acquired by the City) to see if any are suitable for the urban gardens that she is promoting.

In addressing Council Member Schellenberg’s request for an explanation of what the proposed legislation entailed, Linda Lanier, Jacksonville Children’s Commission explained that the funding was for after school programs at three Westside schools; Jacksonville Journey had removed funding for these school programs from its budget.  Council Member Brown noted how important the after school programs were as crime preventive measures.  Concern was raised about future funding for the programs.

The Chair announced the creation of the Hemming Park Revitalization Sub-Committee and named Council Member Lumb as that body’s Chair.  Council Members Brown, Boyer and Daniels were added as sub-committee members.  Chairman Gulliford encouraged the Subcommittee to involve Council Member Redman, as the park was in his Council District; the Chairman suggested that participants in the subcommittee’s undertakings should include JSO, Downtown Vision, adjacent business owners, the Library.  Council Member Brown felt that it was imperative to include people who regularly use the park.  Council Member Daniels noted that a number of the people that visited the park regularly grew up in nearby neighborhoods.  Jessica Deal suggested that the Parks Department be included in the sub-committee’s deliberations.

 

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 3:30 p.m.
