BILL SUMMARY AMEND/APPROVE 6
– 1 (Schellenberg) Urging the
Sheriff to use high crime area security cameras. The amendment limits the use
to City parks without council authorization, requires the Parks Department to
prepare the appropriate plan for the use of the cameras Council Members John Crescimbeni and Warren Jones raised
the issue of the costs of security cameras in light of the constraints that the
Sheriff currently has with his budget.
Council Member Reggie Brown, the bill’s sponsor, felt that it was more cost effective
to acquire and install security cameras than paying for the damages that
vandals were causing. Kelley Boree,
Director, Parks & Recreation, explained the difficulties that her
department has encountered with secuirty camera equipment in the parks (in
some instances, vandals actually shooting cameras out of commission). Council Member Brown indicated that he was
unaware of any security cameras in any of the parks in his Council District. |
