Bill Summary Council Member Boyer wished to hear from the bill’s
sponsors and the Downtown Design Review Board before the committee makes a
recommendation. She distributed copies
of an amendment she’s prepared to offer when the bill is taken up for
action. The amendment is intended to
name only the eastern half of the green space for two reasons: 1) to
expressly exclude the Monroe Street right-of-way from the area to be named,
and 2) to allow an opportunity for the Jacksonville Bar Association or other
entity to contribute funds for landscaping and/or a monument in part of the
space. Council Member Holt asked for
legal research regarding Chief Judge Moran’s previously expressed concerns
about the possibility of injecting bias into court processes (i.e. jury
selection) by prominently naming the courthouse plaza for fallen law

Council Member Schellenberg told Jessica Deal of the Mayor’s Office that he felt it was disingenuous of Mayor Brown to say publicly that he is refusing a City pension when in fact he is enrolled in the state pension plan that is even more costly to the City. He feels that fact should be publicized.
