Council Member Denise Lee raised and discussed concerns that
she had regarding the closure or reduction of programs at parks and community
centers. She was particularly concerned about
Carville Park and the Moncrief Community Center.
The Council Member felt that it was ill-advised to reduce
services/programs at community centers and parks in older neighborhoods where
the parks are in disrepair and where crime is prevalent. Closing centers or reducing programs in the
parks diminishes the community. The
Council Member said that she wanted the Parks & Recreational Department to
provide and promote recreational activities in the parks. Council Member Warren Jones shared Council
Member Lee’s concerns. Parks &
Recreation Department Director Kelley Boree fielded questions and engaged in
the discussion.
Council President Gulliford suggested that parks usage is an issue
that the RCD should address more thoroughly once the budget process had been
completed. Council Member Don Redman
questioned what he thought was a policy of closing swimming pools. Ms. Boree explained the curtailment of pool
hours. Council Member Redman suggested
that people pay a fee for use of the City’s swimming pools to help defray the
costs of the pools’ upkeep. Ms. Boree
suggested that funds be available for an apparatus to collect those suggested
fees.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned
at 2:41 P.M.
