Chief Wilson provided a brief description of a personal escape system (life rope) which is 40 foot of burn restraint rope with harness, descending device and hook.  He reported that on Feb 27th two firemen were trapped in a fire and had to jump out a 2nd story window. One of them was sent to burn center in Gainesville. The purchase of this equipment would have assisted the firemen with a safe escape without further injury.

Red Lights Impact on Visually Impaired Citizens

Mr. Robinson and Ms. Meyer reported that Florida has an existing law that requires drivers to yield to blind pedestrians which is the white cane law. The white cane law has been included on the driver’s license test up until this last legislative year.  The Division of Blind Services is very involved in discussions pertaining to this issue.  Both presenters committed to begin meeting with JSO to raise awareness and encourage more enforcement of the laws already in the books.

The committee referenced citizens that attend Council meetings and comment about disabled pedestrian concerns. Ms. Meyers stated she has worked with Mr. Jones.  She explained that some of his concerns were addressed with the installation of audible cross walks that are in fifteen locations downtown.  CM Daniels and Brown expressed the need for the citizens to have an opportunity to thoroughly explain their concerns. Mr. Robinson and Ms. Meyers committed to scheduling a meeting with this group of citizens and report back to the committee.

CM Daniels recognized Paula Shoup (reassigned to Finance committee) for her service to PHS and welcomed Jessica Morales as the new legislative aide.

There being no further business, meeting was adjourned at 4:20p.m.
