Council
Member Schellenberg distributed information regarding recent changes to the
AT&T Corporation’s pension plan, including a reduction in the discount rate
used to calculate the present-day value of future pension obligations and a
switch to a more recent actuarial mortality table, both of which are intended
to more accurately reflect the actual obligations and asset expectations for
the pension fund. Mr. Schellenberg urged the City to adopt more realistic
investment return and life expectancy measures to produce a more realistic view
of future pension obligations.
