APPROVE 6-1 (CM
BISHOP) There was a lengthy discussion on this agenda item. Council Member Jim Love, Kay Ehas, Chair, Transportation
Committee, Riverside Avondale, Inc., and Kenny Logsdon, Planning Department,
all explained what the project entailed.
They reiterated that in order to obtain a TIGER grant for the
project’s funding, a design plan had to be in place. Council Member Bill Bishop wanted the
ordinance deferred because he has problems with the design for the 5 Points
project. He said that the design was a
bad idea and that he was inclined to vote against the ordinance if it was not
deferred. Steven Tocknell, an
architect, and Bill Joyce of the Public Works Department were a part of the
exchange, particularly with regards to concerns raised by Council Member E.
Denise Lee. Ms. Lee was particularly
concerned that when the parties met to discuss and plan the project’s design,
they did not include the District Council Member, Jim Love, in the
discussions. Mr. Bishop withdrew his motion for deferral but indicated
that he would be voting no on principle. |
