Presentations:

  1. Department of Health- Updates

Allison Hewitt, Department of Health, presented an update on the Zika virus. There was one incident of local transmission reported in Miami-Dade County this year. Ms. Hewitt also delivered information regarding Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS), which afflicts newborns who were in contact with opioids in utero. The Health Department provided a list of available resources to help with NAS prevention and treatment.

  1. Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department

Chief Castleman, JFRD, presented drug overdose data broken down by zip code, council district, day/time of day, hospital, age, race, gender and fire district. Overall, Council District 9 has the highest number of drug overdoses, comprising 19 percent of the city’s total. Demographically, white males in their 30’s are the most frequently treated group. Chief Castleman also shared some preliminary data from the opioid overdose pilot program that began last Thursday. So far, 8 OD patients have been treated at St. Vincent’s and 4 have entered the program. When asked about expanding the program to other local hospitals, it was explained that expansion is part of the second phase of the program – the feasibility of which will be determined after the evaluated success of the first phase of the program.
