Presentations:

  1. Alison Hewitt, Department of Health (DOH) provided an update on the Zika virus. There was only one reported case of Zika virus in 2017 compared to the 11 cases in 2016. DOH adopted Long Branch Elementary School and has been hosting Wellness Wednesday Walks with the students to promote active and healthy lifestyles. Ms. Hewitt invited the committee to attend the HPV Epidemic Documentary viewing at WJCT on March 1st.  The DOH-Block Party held on February 3rd was a success. DOH administered 18 mammograms, numerous health assessments, and 93 hands only CPR trainings. The flu season, which typically ends in March, remains a serious threat throughout the state. Citizens are still being encouraged to get the flu shot. Ms. Hewitt stated that although the DOH has increased education and trainings, there has not been a significant decrease in the trends for infant mortality.

  1. Undersheriff Pat Ivey, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, provided crimes statistics. Year-to-date, there have been 58,039 calls for police services. JSO tracks and reports numbers for 17 priority crime categories to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program. Jacksonville is down approximately 13.79 percent. In response to CM Anderson’s inquiry, Undersheriff Ivey explained JSO’s approach to addressing the responsibility of owners with high crime properties. In addition, there is research being done on potential ordinances that would allow JSO to have more jurisdiction regarding to nuisance violations. CM Dennis requested a monthly report, beginning with October 2017, on the total number of officers (new classes and drop program). CM Bowman requested a percentage of officers assigned to the ‘walking beat’ in high crime areas as a means to deter illegal activity.
  2. Brent Fine, Special Events Manager – Sports and Entertainment, provided an update on the electronic permitting process. The actual processing time is expected to take ten days. In response to CM Dennis inquiry, Mr. Fine stated that an organization would need to provide all requested dates in the initial application to get a complete approval.
