Though the ordinance was marked for deferral, Council Member Danny Becton, the measure’s sponsor, implored the Committee to act on it today.  Assistant General Counsel Susan Grandin explained that while OGC is awaiting some exhibits and Planning & Development Department’s 911 Emergency Addressing Committee has not fully reviewed this item, she saw no problem with the Committee taking the item up. 

 

Attorney  Zach Miller provided provide some background on the nature of the measure and  why the Committee should act.  He explained that there was a considerable amount of money involved.

Council Member Danny Becton indicated that, from his cursory research, he felt that the Date Palms could be an appropriate selection for our area.  Mr. Crescimbeni reiterated the fungus factor and that the Date Palm was more at home in Morocco.  Assistant General Counsel Susan Grandin and Kathleen McGovern, the City Arborist, offered comments and fielded questions in the exchange.

A discussion ensued on whether or not there was a level playing field for taxis and ride sharing vehicles when weighing such factors as regulating background checks on drivers, insurance and other issues.  The exchange was largely between Council Member John Crescimbeni, the sponsor of the proposed ordinance amendment and Council Member Danny Becton.  Assistant General Counsel Paige Johnston and Deputy General Peggy Sidman were a part of the discussion as well.  Ms. Johnston specifically addressed and sought to explain the medallion issue, medallion renewal fees and the moratorium extension.

 

Council Member Crescimbeni said that he would welcome an opportunity to have a noticed meeting with Council Member Becton to discuss the issues regarding a level playing field for the taxi industry and ride sharing vehicles.

At the close of agenda items, Jeff Doherty, Design Projects Manager, Florida Department of Transportation  fielded questions.  Mr. Doherty was under the impression that he had been invited to the meeting to field questions on the National Cemetery road work.  The Chair explained that at the previous TEU Committee meeting, FDOT’s representative addressed issues concerning Wonderwood Expressway roadway repair work. Council Member Ferraro indicated that he expects FDOT to send a representative back to TEU to address issues and questions previously raised about Wonderwood Expressway road repair work.

 

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 3:16 P. M.
