Bill Summary: The bill will allow bars along Bay Street in the Bay Street Town Center area to apply for a sidewalk café permit.  Once received, the proprietors could establish a sidewalk café on their premises.  Proprietors, however, will be prohibited from preparing or mixing the beverages outside and all beverages must be served from within the building.  Also, patrons will not be allowed to take the drink with them when they leave the bar premises. 

 

Proprietors will also be required to take reasonable steps to insure patrons drinking alcoholic drinks are of legal age and to keep patrons from leaving the café with their drink.  Reasonable steps described in the bill are use of movable barriers, staff supervision, and electronic surveillance.

 

Background Information: The Bay Street Town Center is specifically defined as being on Bay Street from Ocean Street to Liberty Street.
