Type of Action: Master Plan Amendment

Bill Summary: This ordinance amends the Ed Austin Regional Park Master Plan (formerly known as the Dunes/District 2 Regional Park), originally approved and adopted by Ordinance 2001-465-E, to incorporate a skate park and to identify certain areas within the park exempted from the Police Athletic League Lease; the bill requires that all development, redevelopment and uses within the park are consistent with the Master Plan and directs Legislative Services to forward a copy of this ordinance, once enacted, to the Director of Parks, Recreation, Entertainment & Conservation Department.  The park, located at 11751 McCormick Road, is in Council District 2.

Background Information: The City acquired this 144-acre site in East Arlington in 1994 for recreational purposes.  The park was classified as regional because it was expected to be used by the majority of the City’s citizens; the park attracts city-wide public interest.  The City determined that a Master Plan would be the most effective tool for determining the appropriate uses of the park.  Provisions were made for modifications of the Master Plan.  Skateboarding has become exceedingly popular.  There is available space at Ed Austin Regional Park for a Skate Park.  To develop a Skate Park, the Master Plan has to be amended pursuant to Ordinance 2001-465-E.  The amendment to the Master Plan to permit development of a Skate Park has been reviewed and approved by the Parks & Recreation Department and the Council Member for District 2.
