Bill Summary: The bill appropriates $348,128 ($293,128 from the Special Council Contingency – Children’s Commission fund and $55,000 from the Mayor’s Early Literacy – Children’s Commission fund) to the Jacksonville Children’s Commission (JCC) to fund several early literacy initiatives for the period of July 1 to September 30, 2007 to continue work previously funded by the Early Learning Coalition.  The initiatives include the Don Brewer Center’s virtual school readiness incubator; evaluation of literacy service providers by the Florida Institute of Education; and funding for the Early Literacy Quality Teams for the period of July 1 to September 30, 2007.

 

Background Information: The Early Literacy Coalition’s grant to initiate these programs expires on June 30, 2007 and this bill continues the Mayor’s early literacy initiatives with City funding through the end of the current fiscal year.  The bill allocates $60,000 to the Brewer Center, $20,000 increased contractual funding to the Florida Institute of Education, and $268,168 for the Early Literacy Quality Teams.
